Colonized lands in southeast Asia and Africa became hotbeds of resistance.
Subject peoples revolted against foreign rule ---> tyrannical behavior of colonial officials ---> the introduction of European schools and curricula ---> high taxation ---> requirements that subject people cultivate certain crops or provide compulsory labor for colonists' enterprises.

Many rebels gained strength from traditional religious beliefs, and priests or prophets often led resistances to colonial rule.
For Example: In Tanganyika---> a local prophet organized the massive Maji Maji rebellion to expel German colonial authorities from east Africa. "magic water" = (maji maji)
Resisted colonial rule by boycotting European goods, organizing political parties and pressure groups, publishing anticolonial newspapers and magazines, and pursuing anticolonial policies through churches and religious groups.
